The circumstances revealed at the opening of the book of Ruth could easily begin a story of God’s unfaithfulness. Yet as the narrative unfolds, we are in fact shown a glimpse of His unending faithfulness. Beginning with Naomi’s devastating loss of her husband and sons, to Ruth’s beautiful and humble response to God, to Boaz’s forfeiture of his personal freedom for Ruth’s familial redemption, we are given a foretaste of the ultimate redemption offered through the person of Jesus Christ. Just as God sent a family redeemer to Naomi in Israel, He also sent Jesus as the ultimate redeemer of all nations. The book of Ruth shows us that our God loves to save even the most broken outsiders and bring them right into the middle of His story.
