Our world is permeated by the struggle for power. Countless kings vie for a seat on countless thrones. This power struggle includes the battle for our hearts. Thankfully, Jesus is a king rules differently from all the rest. This week we see how Jesus’ rule is unlike any other because it is undemocratic. Living in a democratic nation, it’s second nature to us to think that we get a say or a vote in determining how things work and how our lives are run. We apply these democratic instincts to our relationship with God as well. But Jesus shows us that God has given us his holy Scriptures, the Bible, to tell us all we need to know about our sin and our Savior from that sin. His kingdom—and thus the lives of his people—follow Scripture alone.
