Got to Know Understand a Common Phrasal Verb in American English

How did you get to know about Go Natural English? No matter how you learned of it, it is a great place to improve your English language fluency. \\u201cGot to know\\u201d is one of those phrases that does not necessarily translate word-for-word but is often used to express how someone learned of something or somebody.

You will often hear people say, \\u201cI got to know about the American sport of baseball when I was living in the United States.\\u201d You could hear phrases such as, \\u201cI got to know Kenji very well while living and studying in Osaka, Japan.\\u201d \\u201cGot to know\\u201d is such a versatile phrase and one that you should try to use in conversational English.

I have a quick English tip for you.

The phrase is, \\u201cI got to know.\\u201d

\\n

What does this mean?

\\n

Well, in American English, \\u201cI got to know\\u201d means that you know something over time.

\\n

So, for example, \\u201cI\\u2019m getting to know some new friends.\\u201d

\\n

That\\u2019s the present progressive, but I could say it in the past, \\u201cI got to know some new friends\\u201d in let\\u2019s see, what city I could say, \\u201cI got to know some new friends in Bangkok.\\u201d

\\n

I was recently in Bangkok for just about a week, so, I got to know some new friends.

\\n

It\\u2019s not correct to say, \\u201cI knew some new friends.\\u201d

\\n

You have to say, \\u201cI got to know.\\u201d

\\n

This is just a really common phrase, so it\\u2019s really useful.

\\n

I encourage you to use it and also to recognize it when you\\u2019re listening to native English speakers.
