It’s such a common question we decided we needed to do a show on the topic.The ways our freed ancestors came to choose a family identity through a surname are as numerous as our individual family histories. From biological birthright to a relationship with an enslaving family to acts of rebellion to seemingly randomly-chosen names – there is a story of how our ancestors’ sense of identity in the form of a family name they chose to use.
