The Green Book: The Black Travelers’ Guide to Jim Crow America. For nearly 30 years, a guide called the Negro Motorist Green Book provided African Americans with advice on safe places to eat and sleep when they traveled through the Jim Crow-era United States.Author and playwright, Calvin Alexander Ramsey has written a children’s book that teaches this history in his book, "Ruth and the Green Book". The story is a fictional account about how this guidebook - and the kindness of strangers – enabled Ruth and her family to make a safe journey from Chicago to her grandma's house in Alabama. While the story is fiction, it relays how The Green Book played an important role in helping a generation of African American travelers avoid some of the indignities of Jim Crow. For more information about Calvin Alexander Ramsey, please visit:http://calvinalexanderramseysr.com.
