I was at a pub with some friends recently. The server came around and asked what we wanted for supper. I ordered a burger and then she asked me the perennial question:

Would you like fries or salad with that?

We all know that question. It’s said “fries or salad”, but it could be anything:

* Do you want to have that drink or stay sober?

* Do you want to buy that item or be able to pay off your credit card?

* Do you want to blow up at that person or have a nice evening?

It’s a willpower challenge. But when the server asked me, “would you like fries or salad with that?” what popped into my head was:

“I had a salad for lunch.”

I was good. I did what I was supposed to do. And so what do you think I ordered with my burger for supper? You all know the answer.

But why? Why did that little piece of information – “I had a salad for lunch” – change everything?

What this shows us, is there is something evolution has put into our brains that can do fantastic damage to our progress towards a meaningful life, but we are not always conscious of it. Our spiritual ancestors saw this. They warned us; however, I think we missed the message. This week we are going to remember.

Join us this last Sunday in our Stick-to-it Christmas series where we focus on navigating the stressful holiday season with our Meaningful Life intact. If you know someone who could use this teaching, please forward this to them.
