Speaker: Jeff Jarvis I met a guy at a party a couple years ago who had just started going to church. He was so pumped about his new found faith. He seemed like such a great guy. So open, so eager to learn and explore Christianity. I crossed paths recently with a woman who knew him and I asked how he was doing. I was shocked when what she had to say wasn't flattering. She said, "He got religion and now he's different". The person used words like judgmental, condescending, closed-minded, even negative. What is it about religion that can do that? What causes someone who's seriously pursuing their spiritual journey to become the kind of person that often irreligious people want to avoid...especially when Jesus seemed to have the opposite effect? Is it possible to live a spiritually devoted life that steers clear of all that? This Sunday we're going to talk about one of the key shifts that can prevent this. Questions: 1. What is it about religion that can wreck people? 2. What causes someone - who's seriously pursuing their spiritual journey - to become the kind of person that often irreligious people want to avoid? 3. Why did Jesus seem to have the opposite effect? "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged" "And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, 'Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,' when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite!" Matthew 7:1-5 (The Bible) 4. What's on your list?
