Episode 5 Police Suicide

Published: Feb. 12, 2020, 8 a.m.

In this episode, Tom and Chris discuss the horrible reality that is Police Suicide.  Reports state that in 2019,  228 Officers took their own lives.  Some states are taking large steps to reduce if not eliminate this epidemic.

Tom and Chris discuss the influence of the public perception of policing as well as the stress related to policing as a career.   Some studies suggest Officers witness approximately 188 critical incidents (homicide, child abuse, automobile fatalities, etc) during their careers.

There is a stigma associated with Police Suicide (and suicide in general) that makes it hard to reach out for help.  Asking for help is seen as a sign of weakness.  The stigma harshly judges us because we are suppose to "suck it up" and not let anything get to us.  This is just not realistic!

There has been a large increase in Peer Support programs and there seems to be a shift in mindset and perception of post traumatic stress.  Tom and Chris share some personal experiences that bring this home.
