Episode 10: Corona Life...you can't just add lime to make it better!

Published: April 22, 2020, 7 a.m.

Tom and Chris discuss the economic and social impact of Corona Virus on the Las Vegas area.  This also impacts the way policing is done.  Recently, the Las Vegas Metropolitan PD welcomed a new class of recruits with a "virtual" graduation.  It was held outside with only the new officers, the Academy Staff, and the Sheriff in attendance.  No badge pinning by loved ones, no family photos, etc.

The economic impact is requiring layoffs, changes in personnel allocations, and restructuring of some units in Public Safety.  The act of policing is also changing to accommodate the social distancing guidelines in place.  All of these things are adding to the cumulative stress of our First Responders.  This, added with the stress on families and friends, makes things much more difficult.  How do we deal with all of this.

Experts say that you should follow these guidelines (there are lots more):

  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Limit Alcohol intake
  • Keep a journal by your bed
  • Give yourself 10 minutes/day to do nothing

Bottom line, be aware of your own feelings and seek help when you need it.  There is no shame in asking for help.  Please reach out for it!
