Our Addiction to Simplicity

Published: Jan. 5, 2021, noon

2020 was only the dress rehearsal for 2021.

We are going to be pushed to deal with more crazy than ever before, and this world is not simple, it and the issues we face, are complex.  My work is dense, my courses are dense, and we cannot really get at the relevant meaning if we try and dumb this down.

We have an unhelpful addiction to simplicity, and a shared evolved laziness in pursuing nuance or the more elegant Simplicity which exists on the Far side of complexity.  This episode unpacks:

  • our human evolutionary biology,
  • why we think quick vs slow,
  • our cognitive biases and lack of critical thinking,

and what these are costing us, why we should care, and most importantly what we can do about it.

"The fact that we are
most reliably inclined
to reject or accept an idea
based on our subjective,
or shared opinion
of the person
through whom they arrive
should be all the evidence we need
to admit to ourselves
that we cannot
think critically."
