Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock are summoned by the Vedalans, the oldest known spacefaring race, to recover a stolen religious artifact called the Soul of Skarr, the theft of which must be kept secret in order to prevent a holy war from enveloping the galaxy. In order to carry out their mission across a volatile and dangerous planetary terrain, Kirk and Spock are teamed with members of other alien races that are experts in their field, but soon after the expedition gets under way, they begin to suspect that there is a traitor in their midst.
