Artsakh in the Media: The Violence of Neutrality

Published: Oct. 9, 2020, 3:47 p.m.

In this mini episode, Randy, Leo, and guest Hasmik Djoulakian talk about the Azeri and Turkish attacks on Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in the past week, Armenians’ efforts to fight back, and the ways politicians and the media obscure the hierarchies of power behind acts of violence.

Major American and British news sources have portrayed the conflict as an inter-ethnic squabble with no aggressor, no way to know who shot first, and no inconvenient moral questions. Meanwhile, the governments of Azerbaijan and Turkey have been making veiled threats against Armenians with genocidal overtones for months, and the recent aggression points towards potential genocide.
