MAREILE PALEY | Making learning meaningful, engaging and relevant

My guest on the podcast is Mareile Paley and in this episode, she shares her family's adventures and their journey to unschooling their two boys. Both Mareile and her husband Matthieu went to school and college. Thereafter they both followed their passions and chose paths that had very little to do with what they studied.

Learning doesn't take place in the bubble of school and university. The world does not ONLY require mathematics, literacy and science - especially not in the way it is taught and learned at traditional schools.  Granted many children thrive in the school classroom, but so much learning takes place outside of those four walls.  Many parents and educators put a great deal of weight on their child's performance in a very narrow scope of skills, knowledge and understanding. They also don't provide them with the support or space to explore their individual interests and passions, nor communicate the value of these things that are so important to each child.

Whether your child is in a more traditional education system, an international or private school, homeschooled or like my podcast guest Mareile's children, unschooled, we can all do our best to recognise the uniqueness of our children and honour their interests and support their natural curiosity. The world is constantly changing and the best we can do is to help our children find their own way in it and find something that they can do that brings them success and contentment.

Mareile shares her adventures in many different forms of schooling and how unschooling her children has really made learning more meaningful, engaging and relevant to her children and her and her husband as parents.
