Stop telling people to 'Put your oxygen mask on first'.

Published: June 14, 2023, 8:10 a.m.

Put your own oxygen mask on first.

\n

Seemingly innocuous, a reminder to engage in self-care, which I'm totally all about.

\n

However,

\n

When you're struggling in life and doing your best and nothing seems to be helping this is not a helpful statement.

\n

You know that self-care is important.

\n

You know you need to look after yourself.

\n

\n

But sometimes\xa0

\n

You can't find the mask, or\xa0

\n

Yours hasn't dropped down, or

\n

You don't know how to put it on, or\xa0

\n

You look at it and can't remember what it is.

\n

\n

Whilst the air hosts were explaining what happens in the safety instructions,\xa0

\n

Someone was talking to you, or

\n

You were running through the to do list of what needs to happen when you hop off your flight, or

\n

Your mind was consumed with worry about an ongoing problem or

\n

it had taken all your energy just to get on the plane you were exhausted

\n

\n

Or all of the above.

\n

It's not always that easy.
