Bikin' Bits: Missoula and Rattlesnake Rec

Published: Sept. 22, 2020, 5:54 p.m.

Welcome to Bikin' Bits - a bit about bikin' - so you don't have to look forever to find the trails you want to ride. Where we tell you the loops to ride, the loopdy-loops to ride, the uphills, the downhills.

Where we summarize the trails, so you know exactly where you want to go, how long you want to spend, how much elevation you want to gain and how much descent you want to fly down. And of course there'll be a brewery recommendation at the end.

The Rattlesnake National Recreation Area is where to ride when visiting Missoula. A wilderness feel, smooth singletrack, and, it's close enough to ride from downtown.

We rode an 8 mile loop with 1300 feet of elevation gain and a fast-paced downhill. Park at main trailhead, ride up Sawmill Gulch Road (which parallels Ewok aka Trail 24.2) to Trail 24 - which goes through the gate then follow 24.1 with a few turns to stay on that trail, but it just continues up.

When its time to head down, you’ll come across Trail 28.1 (you’ll make a right to find that) and then bomb down 28.1, to 28.2 bomb down, a bit of up, then back on 24.1 to bomb down 24.2 aka Ewok trail aka Birds of Prey aka Fence Line Trail.

Yeah, I know - simply put, ride up, then ride down!

Breweries to visit in Missoula: Bayern Brewing, Imagine Nation, KettleHouse, Draught Works, Tamarack, Conflux, Great Burn, GILD, Big Sky, Highlander, Cranky Sam.
