Batch163: 1901 Speakeasy's Prohibition Cocktails w/Jared Krupp

Published: Aug. 27, 2019, 7:05 a.m.

Cheers to all the bootleggers out there! We're mixing things up today and having our first ever episode dedicated to cocktails. We're at 1901 Speakeasy hanging out with general manager Jared Krupp getting the skinny on all things mixology, prohibition-era drinks, and what it's like being behind the bar.
We talk about the history of 1901 Speakeasy; it's prior iterations as a bar, and how Jared got involved with the project. Jared discusses his past in the bar and service industry, how being a teacher has helped him as a bartender, the importance of fresh ingredients, how to balance flavors in a drink, why gin and whiskey were so crucial to prohibition, and the secret to being a good bartender. He also talks about how to be a better bar-goer, the weirdest requests he's received, the strangest ingredients he's used, and so much more!
In addition to talking all things cocktails, mixology, prohibition drinks and running a bar, we also have a "flight" of his favorite cocktails to sample: The Sazerac, South Side, Old Fashion, and Hemingway Daiquiri. Jared discusses his ingredients and tasting notes with each drink.
Everything wraps up with a round of rapid-fire questions, spirits edition.

A huge thank you to Jared Krupp for sharing his time, knowledge, and some of his drinks.
