Joanna Detz, Executive Director of EcoRI News (www.ecoRI.org) is a Brown University grad, and started out as a political news intern at CNN's Washington, D.C. bureau and then as a reporter working for a weekly newspaper north of Boston.
As the newspaper industry changed/retracted, she pivoted to a career in graphic design and marketing and is now the executive director of EcoRI News.
In 2009, Joanna thought that there was a lack of reporting on environmental issues at time when the region is facing some of the most serious challenges. So she founded EcoRI News with no seed money. In the first year, she worked full time while also growing EcoRI News. The organization now employs four full time staffers.

In the first segment we discuss some of the challenges faced by legacy media and some of the opportunities for digital media startups
In the second segment we discuss what's been in the news this year. We talk about the new compost law, challenges at the Central Landfill, RIPTA fare hikes, a proposed fee on solar by National Grid and the expansion of the Algonquin pipeline in Burrillville.
In the third segment we talk about their social venture, EcoRI Earth, a fee-based residential compost collection program that supports the news operation of our nonprofit.
