It is widely agreed by experts that practical, affordable energy storage for homes as well as the grid is the key missing component required to allow widespread use of renewable energy. This is because the sun and wind often do not supply energy when it is needed, and when they do the electricity provided is so highly variable that it destabilizes the grid.

Storage technologies today are: too expensive to build and operate, limited in the amount and length of time they can store energy, and many are made out environmentally harmful materials.

We have developed a new storage technology that solves these problems: a solid state, non-chemical battery that stores energy as heat. For example, 180 kWh for our home size unit, compared to 10 kWh for a well know new chemical battery. Enough for weeks-not hours, of use per charge. In a small footprint. With no toxic or rare materials. At a competitive cost.

And, this battery can also provide the energy needed for heat, hot water, cooling, & freezing plus pure water for a family, a hotel, or a factory. In an easy to operate and maintain device that is both scalable (from 100 MW to 100MW per unit) and modular.

Over the past six years, we have designed and field tested 3 generations of a new thermal storage technology for large-scale applications such as grid and the steel industry that now only solves the storage problems, but makes it possible to save most of the 60% of the energy contained in fuel now going up the stack as waste heat.

We believe that this technology will prove to be a game changer, leading to a true paradigm shift in energy system design and sustainability.

Our technology is based upon the age-old method used to contain very high temperature molten phase change metal mass with layers of refractory. This thermal containment approach is based on the phenomena of “thermal dynamic quasi stasis,” as I have described in my US Patent. This is the same way the planet earth has contained it molten core for several billion years.

Our third generation can be mass-produced as we no longer build the refractory layers by hand. This generation can store slightly more than 100 MW of usable thermal energy in an 18 cubic meter containment.

We want to package units for smaller-scale applications: factory, commercial, and residential use. Typical home unit can provide 170-180 kilowatts hours of electricity on a single charge plus sufficient heat energy for heat, cooling and clean water production. Its electric capacity is 100x that of any comparable battery system. No other back up system provides both electric/heat & cooling and can do so on a continuous basis to substantially reduce energy bills. We are about to launch a crowdfounding Campaign with Indiegogo the cover some of the cost of getting prototypes built and UL certification of this small version of our thermal battery.
