Judith Miller\\xa0joins\\xa0City Journal\\xa0managing editor\\xa0Paul Beston\\xa0to discuss the life of Michael A. Sheehan, who passed away last month at age 63.

A 40-year veteran of\\xa0the\\xa0U.S. counterterrorism community, Sheehan served as a top official for the State Department, the Pentagon, and\\xa0the\\xa0New York\\xa0Police Department. As a military officer on the National Security Council staff for Presidents\\xa0George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, he\\xa0urged\\xa0officials to place greater priority on the growing threat of militant Islamist\\xa0groups, especially al-Qaida.

Later in his career, Sheehan focused on non-Islamist\\xa0challenges\\xa0to American peace and security. He warned that overreacting to terrorist\\xa0threats had adverse consequences\\u2014including stoking Islamophobia that\\xa0couldalienate Muslim-American communities,\\xa0making them less likely to provide\\xa0tips that had helped thwart and disrupt numerous plots.
