Published: Oct. 28, 2020, 3:05 a.m.

b'Gangaadharaha: One who holds gangā in his hair knots. This
story is narrated in detail in Vālmiki Rāmāyana , Shivapurāna ,
Mahābhārata , Devi bhāgavatha upapurāna etc. King Sagar’s
children were burnt to ashes by a great rishi for their misconduct.
Only Ganga’s water could liberate them. Many tried to get
Ganga to flow on the earth in King Sagar’s dynasty. Finally it was
Bhageeratha who was successful. Bhageeratha did penance to
bring Gangā to earth from heavan to liberate his dead ancestors.
Bhageeratha did tapas for a very long time to please Brahma the
creator. He instructed him to please goddess Gangā. Again
Bhageeratha worshipped Gangā through his penance for a long
time. Ganga appeared before him. She accepted to descent to
earth but she warned Bhageeratha that the whole earth may be
destroyed by her flow and force when falling from heaven.
No one is capable of bearing me in all the three worlds except the
greatest of the lords, the blue necked one, Maheshwara.
Bhageeratha pleases Lord Shiva who then agrees to receive
Ganga. He also humbles the pride of Ganga and finally lets out a
streak of Ganga from his matted locks and the ancestors of
Bhageeratha are liberated. We also discuss the Vedantic
symbolism of the story.
