Episode 87 leaves you thinking: “It was bound to happen”. The hosts took a chance on that one movie with the poster/video box art that always seemed to promise more than it would deliver. “Dolls” (1987) is that movie. Richard never trusted it, Will and Jolyon barely remembered it, and the filmmakers seem to have made it to fulfill some obligation. None of this is to say the episode isn’t a fun listen. The hosts talk about that movie with two Tom Hardys in it. No, not “The Hardy Boys”, but “Legend” (no, not the Tom Cruise/Tim Curry one). The guys also talk about “The Girl with All the Gifts” and something Will watched with a cat inside a cat that just looks like a bath mat. Let’s just say that was bound to happen as well. So, “Dolls” (1987) comes up for discussion. Richard thinks the little girl might be Danny from “The Shining” in drag. Will says it could just be Lena Dunham. None of that matters, because there are Madonna Wannabes and bad characters at every turn. Are we supposed to like the doofus? Are we supposed to trust him prancing about with the little girl? Do the dad and stepmom deserve to be turned into crappy dolls? And why isn’t the stepmom character named Judy, since she ends up with Punch? The answers to these questions and more as we trudge though the rainstorm to end up dry at the mansion of some old posho couple who belong in a better movie.
