Nominated for Best Documentary, "Hale County This Morning, This Evening" is an inspired and intimate portrait of a place and its people, it looks at the lives of Daniel Collins and Quincy Bryant, two young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama, over the course of five years. Directed by first-time feature filmmaker RaMell Ross, the film is a corrective to the usual stereotypical views of black people on screen. It’s all the more significant on Black History Month as Ross joined the shamefully small group of Black directors nominated for an Academy Award.
