Published: June 17, 2016, 3 p.m.

For Beyond 50's "History" talks, listen to an interview with Tim Shanahan. He'll talk about his extraordinary friendship with Muhammad Ali. In 1976, Shanahan was a living in Chicago and was associated with a charity that arranged for athletes to speak to underprivileged kids. Ali was also living in Chicago, having just reclaimed his title as heavyweight champion of the world. When Shanahan contacted Ali to ask whether he would consider participating, not only did the Champ agreed, but he went so far as to invite Shanahan to his home so he could learn more about the program. The two spent several hours talking; it was the beginning of a forty-year friendship that continues today. As their unique friendship evolved, Ali began inviting Shanahan to his sparring sessions and eventually to his Deer Lake, Pennsylvania training camp where he prepared to fight greats like Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers. Outside of the ring, Shanahan will share his memories of the celebrities the two unlikely friends met together and the numerous, unpublicized incidents of Ali's generosity to people in need.
