Gathering 85: PRIDE

Published: July 1, 2019, 1:30 a.m.

Shame and guilt. Both are powerful emotions inducing feelings of inadequacy, failure and hopelessness. But when conformity is no longer an option, where can you turn? How do you escape the shame and guilt of living out your truth? This was exactly the predicament the LGBTQ+ community found themselves 50 years ago this week at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Regarded as an underground safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community, the Stonewall Inn welcomed the inadequate and the different, those oppressed by a society that regarded them as mentally ill and illegally living out their truth. But on July 28, 1969, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community broke out against a police raid and that all changed. Join us as Rev. Tony Minear, Ph.D. examines the implications of this watershed moment in history. Discover the commonalities the LGBTQ+ community and all of humanity shares with Jesus who too made that walk of shame. Be encouraged by the knowledge that your journey into wholeness from shame to PRIDE has less to do with overcoming oppression than simply embracing and loving who you are, beautifully and wonderfully made.
