Gathering 76: The Christ Window - Frederick Douglass

Published: April 29, 2019, 7 p.m.

In a postmodern world that is now nearly two centuries ahead of the unjust oppression of slaves in America, it’s hard to understand why oppression of any kind still exists. But it does. Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. for his ongoing series highlighting the lives of the faces and figures found in our worship center’s six-story-high stained glass Great West Window. This week’s focus is on Frederick Douglass, an American social reformer and abolitionist in the late 1800’s, who was revolutionary in calling out Christianity as the source of the oppression of slaves. Explore the correlation of Douglass’ fight against the oppression of slavery with today’s equally insipid and oftentimes veiled oppression of spiritual freedom. Discover how the Bible mining practices of many of today’s Christian establishments that selectively brand scripture verses to further a cause threatens to compromise spiritual freedom and contradicts everything that Jesus was about.
