Gathering 122: Let's Talk About...Salvation | Someone to Blame

Published: March 9, 2020, 12:30 a.m.

Reading from René Girard: Everywhere and always, when human beings either cannot or dare not take their anger out on the thing that has caused it, they unconsciously search for substitutes, and more often than not they find them. Scapegoating. It’s been around for millions of years since man first walked the earth. Call it primeval or instinctual, we have a propensity to point our fingers and blame others for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults imposed upon us, especially from outliers or people groups that are dissimilar to our own. After all, isn’t it easier to blame someone else for our oppression or injustice rather than taking responsibility for it ourselves? But what if it’s God? What does God want us to do? If the idea of salvation is rooted in sacrifice, what alterative other than violence do we have? This week we continue our worship series, “Let’s talk about…Salvation.” Listen as Pastor Tony Minear invites us to consider how our view of God shapes how we justify our actions upon others. Explore a new way to restore peace at all levels by resisting the urge to scapegoat our way through life. Recorded live at Beatitudes Church, Phoenix, AZ on 03/08/20 Preaching: Rev.
