Gathering 120: The Christ Window - Paul Tillich

Published: Feb. 24, 2020, 1:30 a.m.

You’re familiar with the old adage, “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” This perceived truth lies at the heart of one of humanity’s biggest fears and anxieties: we are all going to die, eventually. Fatalistic? Yes, but religion, and more specifically Christianity, promises permanency by overcoming death through salvation by simply believing in Jesus Christ. But what if you’re not religious? What happens when you die? Paul Tillich, a Christian existentialist philosopher and one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century, explored this challenge to the notion of human existence. Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. for his ongoing series highlighting the lives of the faces and figures found in our worship center’s six-story-high stained glass Great West Window. This week’s focus is on Paul Tillich. Listen and explore what Tillich referred to as the “ground of being” – the place we all go back to where life itself originated. Discover a deep sense of meaning to your life by simply grasping that your life, your very existence, truly matters and that is enough. Then learn how common this truth can be for every human being no matter their creed, gender, sexual orientation, religion or race, and transform that knowledge into making love real for others.
