Gathering 118: Formless

Published: Feb. 10, 2020, 2 a.m.

“All the world’s a stage…”, “Life is like a box of chocolates…”, and “I am the good shepherd” are useful metaphors to increase our understanding of the world. But can a metaphor also increase our perception of God or how we experience the divine? This week we continue our worship series, “Let’s talk about…God.” Listen as Pastor Tony Minear invites us to consider three choices we make when experiencing God and/or the divine. While it’s true that metaphors are a powerful way to provide clarity of seemingly formless or abstract ideas such as God and/or the divine, caution should be exercised in relying too heavily on metaphors making them literalized and exact. Not only can metaphors tell us what is, but also what is not. Come explore and experiment with your own metaphor for God and discover the creative power unleashed through sharing your metaphor with others.
