Gathering 101: The Unfair Curator

Published: Oct. 21, 2019, midnight

Ever find yourself telling a story to illustrate a point that you want to make? Jesus did this often in the form of a parable to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. But sometimes Jesus’ silence on an issue spoke louder than his actual words. Take for instance, the parable of the unjust curator (manager) from Luke 16:1-9. In it, Jesus tells of a manager who is about to be fired who gains favor with his master's debtors by remitting some of their debts. For many this parable seems to show Jesus approving of dishonest and unethical business practices. But how can that be? Although scholars do not concur on the exact meaning behind this parable, they do agree that Jesus seems to end it rather abruptly at verse 9 leaving many to surmise its meaning through what it was that Jesus didn’t say than what he did. Listen as Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. explores this seemingly contradictory advice of Jesus to be like the dishonest curator. Discover what reading between the lines of Jesus’ parable through a 21st century lens could mean for us and the future of Christianity.
