What You Can Control

Published: Nov. 18, 2023, 3 p.m.

b'There is very little in life that we control outside ourselves, our behaviors, and our actions. Experiencing the estimated thousands of thoughts we face daily can feel overwhelming. We are best served when trying to change our behaviors by doing so at the thought stage, before developing an emotion around the thought, and before we act on it. We can learn to manage our thoughts instead of them controlling us. When practiced with intention, over time, we can reduce the frequency and intensity of harmful thoughts by recognizing those that are impractical, causing us to feel anxiety, upset, or low mood. One way to achieve this is by replacing negative thoughts, when they occur, with other thoughts. It can be a completely different subject, thoughts of gratitude or thankfulness. By practicing the technique of thought-stopping and replacement, we stand a greater chance of changing lanes from thoughts that do not serve us to those that can help us. This does not imply that we can eliminate all negative thoughts - that is unrealistic. Nor is it to say just stop thinking negative thoughts, and everything will suddenly improve. Thoughts are a naturally occurring process that can occur in our subconscious mind, where often, we are unaware of the storm brewing until it is upon us. What we can control, however, is the quantity, duration, quality, and impact of our thoughts by being intentional about shifting to productive thoughts, which help us experience greater peace and well-being. Making a conscious effort to develop constructive and helpful thinking habits can create more of the thoughts we want, reducing those we dislike that are harmful to us. No one has more control over this process than ourselves - we alone hold the key to that door.\\xa0
