Do you know what it takes to build a sustainable and energy-efficient house from scratch?

Have you ever wondered the things you need to put into place and consider in order to build a house that supports a ‘clean energy lifestyle’ --- a lifestyle with freedom and safety, that’s better for your kids and their kids, self-sustaining, energy-efficient, with less pollution, as well as cost-effective?

Laurie and Roger Husted are a power couple who support sustainability. Laurie and Roger met at Cornell, arriving from each coast (Queens / LA) and spent 5 years in the middle, doing graduate work in Pittsburgh, PA. They built a home in the Hudson Valley where Laurie works in sustainability at Bard College and Roger is an ophthalmologist. Daughter Tessa is a rising senior at Red Hook High School and Ethan is back in the ‘Burgh at Carnegie Mellon.

In this episode, Laurie and Roger Husted share their journey to sustainability and what it took for them to build their 3-bedroom, 2300-sq.ft sustainable home in the forest by the lake - solar-powered, with air-source heat pumps, and connected to the Red Hook’s clean energy grid - with electric cars zeroing out their carbon footprint.

Hear the Husteds share their commitment to support a clean energy future - and get energized.

Supernova 1: “Clean energy is freedom, safety, and a better future for our kids and their kids.”

Supernova 2: [How did you wind up choosing what to do and how to do it?] “We tried to find someone who shared our values and spoke the same language in terms of wanting to do right by our pocketbook - and the planet. Investing in relationships not only builds a better house - it builds a better life”.

Supernova 3: “It\'s hard to know what your baseline is when we build from scratch. We did what we did because it was the right thing to do, and it was a good investment in the long run. This house is something that\'s going to be here for 100 years, or maybe longer. And the lifetime costs of this house being here is more than what we spent upfront.”

Supernova 4: Even with a good architect and builder, it’s important to double-check everything, because everyone is human and we all make mistakes.
