Sweet sorghum is a multi-purpose crop. It produces food, sugary juice from its stem, which can be made into table syrup. If fermented the juice can be used to produce ethanol and the bagasse and leaves make excellent fodder for animals. There is no other crop which produces food, fuel, and fodder from the same piece of land. Sweet sorghum was first introduced in India by Nimbkar Agriculture Research Institute during the early 1970s. In this podcast, Dr. Rajvanshi talks about the various research and development activities related to sweet sorghum at NARI for the past 40 years and what can be done to popularize this crop which has immense potential.
