This teaching is something that we all in Torah need to grasp. There is a difference between the letter of the law or Torah and the spirit of the Torah. One of the ways you can tell if you are focused only on the letter of the Torah is you have to keep it perfectly and if you don't you feel condemned. That's the letter of the law. Yes we need to try to keep the Torah according to what is written but we also need to realize there is Grace. The Messiah was constantly trying to teach the spirit of the law to the Pharisees. They were a accusational, critical, judgmental and mean-spirited people. They were always looking for people's not keeping the law. They thought they understood the Torah and yet the Messiah kept teaching them that they didn't. And we need to make sure that we are not like this, that is a Pharisee.
