Reality Isnt What It Seems
On the surface one might think Jesus is teaching that rich people go to hell and poor people go to heaven. However, Jesus often used parables to correct misunderstandings or misperceptions about God. He would put forward a common belief then proceed to turn it upside down. Parables are highly figurative stories designed to enlighten those receptive to God while at the same time blind those closed to God. We will seek to understand what Jesus is turning upside down in this teaching. The purpose of turning a common belief upside down is to shock us into action.
