No More of This (Luke 22)

Uffda! What a rough week of news. Political refugees stuck in Afghanistan and stranded at our southern border. Wildfires in the west. Floods in the south. Killer bees and toxic algae and melting glaciers. COVID numbers roaring back with a fourth wave of new cases as Americans argue about whether vaccination is a civic duty or an attack on individual rights. Finger-pointing, cancel culture, yelling and blaming. It is exhausting. And depressing.

If only there was a way for Christians to withstand the onslaught of negativity, to rise above the pettiness, find hope and faith, and fight the real battle—the battle for our hearts. It turns out that Jesus, himself a political refugee, shows us the right way to fight the battle. Spoiler alert: the real enemy is not the person you think it is. Jesus shows us a different way. God’s way. And then the apostle Paul explains in more detail what Jesus modeled. We are going to look at two readings from the Bible. We will circle back around to Ephesians 6:10-20, but first, let’s start with the events just before the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus. For this story, we turn to Luke 22:39-51.
