Serve to Love (John 13:1-17)

I've spent a lot of time thinking about service lately. Last week, we took a cruise and the service was incredible. When we got home, I wondered where the servers were to clear the table, do the dishes, and do the nightly turn down service (I really enjoy chocolates on the pillow!). What's more, is that those servers do that for thousands of people on board the ship. Truly, it's an amazing example of service. Having seen such amazing service, I began to see what I could learn and apply as a leader here at Waukee Community Church and at my job as a tech support agent. As I began to study the stewards, servers and so on, I realized that service wasn't the end goal of what they wanted. Service, I discovered, was merely the vehicle they used to provide an excellent cruise experience. The goal was, first and foremost, to provide an experience - not merely a service. By now, you're probably wondering what all this had to do with WCC and with the message on Sunday. We spend a lot of time talking about service (it is the "S" in BLOSM, after all), but, sometimes, I wonder if we misunderstand what service is all about. Is our job as followers of Christ merely to do good works, or is there something deeper to which our service drives us? Hope to see you Sunday as we resume our study of John's Gospel in chapter 13. Take the time to read the first 17 verses and then join us Sunday as we discover what it means to "Serve to Love." I can't wait to see you then! In Christ, Thomas
