King Solomon is one of the most interesting characters in the Bible. In 1 Kings 10:23-24, the writer observes that the king “was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth” and that the “whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom that God has put in his heart”. Many brought gifts to King Solomon’s court just for the opportunity to learn from the Master. Fortunately, Solomon wrote a book, Proverbs, so that his great wisdom and practical advice could be recorded for the ages. One of Solomon’s highest priorities was passing on the wisdom he had accumulated to his children, especially to his son, Rehoboam, who would secede him as the King of Israel. On Sunday, we will have the opportunity to study the first words that Solomon recorded for the benefit of his son (likely when he was a teenager), a word of warning about the kind of company he should keep. Solomon’s words will benefit us all and I look forward to sharing them with you this Sunday. See you there.
