The Making of Penn Park

In 2007, the University of Pennsylvania acquired 14-acres of asphalt parking lots on the western edge of the Schuylkill River from the United States Postal Service. As part of its Penn Connects campus development plan, the University would replace the concrete and asphalt with a sustainable, vibrant green swath of open space and athletic fields. Penn Park opened to the public in September, 2011. A major feature of Penn Park is its commitment to creating a sustainable landscape while also meeting athletic and open space needs of the community.
