Our guest this week is Author and Math Professor, Jolie Phuong Hoang. She is visiting from Fonthill, Ontario, Canada, where she teaches at Niagara College in Welland. Jolie’s first book, Anchorless, describes her family’s escape from Vietnam. Giving life to her father’s voice through remembrance and speculation, she brings her childhood of war and government upheaval to us with respectful honesty. Later, in Three Funerals for My Father, she both enlarges upon and continues that story with her own voice and experiences. Both Anchorless and Three Funerals for My Father have earned international recognition. This recognition includes a honourable mention at the San Francisco Book Festival; Runner-up at the New England Book Festival, and a Bronze Medal at the Wishing Shelf Book Award, UK. Jolie has also found a place on CBC’s 57 Nonfiction Books to Read in the Fall of 2021, and been shortlisted for the Annual Hamilton Literary Awards.
