68: The Deer Hunter (1978) and Cherry (2021)

Published: April 28, 2021, 8 p.m.

This week's theme is Before/After War. Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" (1978) is the story of friends from a steel town in Pennsylvania who join the army near the end of the VietNam War. Matt and Adam both found the story convoluted and unrealistic, but both felt the strength the general theme and great acting make it worthwhile. Beware, it is over three hours long. "Cherry" (2021) is about a young man who's going nowhere, so he joins the army at the beginning of the second Iraq war. We liked it more than most critics, and both recommending seeing it.\xa0

Next up: Heist Movies with Stanley Kubrick's, "The Killing" (1956) and from Korea, "The Handmaiden" (2016).\xa0
