314: Blessing of Courage

Published: Oct. 15, 2023, 1:20 p.m.

\nWhere does our courage come from? It certainly (and paradoxically) doesn\u2019t come from our efforts to make ourselves safe, or strong, or to armour ourselves against the world.
\n

\nIndeed, it may be that our courage really comes from what is most vulnerable in us, and what is most true - the something in us that lives very close to fear, and is also a neighbour to joy.

\n
\nBlessing of Courage
\n

\nI cannot say
\nwhere it lives,
\nonly that it comes
\nto the heart
\nthat is open,
\nto the heart
\nthat asks,
\nto the heart
\nthat does not turn away.
\n
\nIt can take practice,
\ndays of tugging at
\nwhat keeps us bound,
\nseasons of pushing against
\nwhat keeps our dreaming
\nsmall.
\n
\nWhen it arrives,
\nit might surprise you
\nby how quiet it is,
\nhow it moves
\nwith such grace
\nfor possessing
\nsuch power.
\n
\nBut you will know it
\nby the strength
\nthat rises from within you
\nto meet it,
\nby the release
\nof the knot
\nin the center of
\nyour chest
\nthat suddenly lets go.
\n
\nYou will recognize it
\nby how still
\nyour fear becomes
\nas it loosens its grip,
\nperhaps never quite
\nleaving you,
\nbut calmly turning
\ninto joy
\nas you enter the life
\nthat is finally
\nyour own.
