178: Saying Yes

Published: Feb. 28, 2021, 10:06 a.m.

\nWhat does it take to not just say 'yes' to our lives and to one another, but to bring our beauty, dignity, creativity and imagination in response? It's a different path to take from 'turning away', and equally different from 'passive acceptance'. Being a human affords us this possibility - that when we encounter fear, shame, wonder, injustice, confusion, or hope, we have the chance to muster a response that brings something new into the world. This episode of Turning Towards Life is a conversation about what it is to hold what we would rather not hold, and to answer it with beauty, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace.

\n\n\n\nSaying Yes
\n
\nAnd could I, like this picture frame
\nhold any image I was given?
\nI think of the news last night\u2014how I would rather not hold
\nwhat I saw there.
\nI think of what I learned just yesterday
\nabout myself and notice how
\nI would rather push the image away.
\nBut could I be like this picture frame
\nthat will hold anything and in so doing
\nhonor its importance? Honor
\neverything, no matter how mundane,
\nno matter how frightening,
\nas something worth knowing,
\nsomething essential to what it means to be alive,
\na soup can, perhaps, a petunia, or a scream.
\nHow easily the frame says yes to the world,
\ntakes it in, anything, with no judgement,
\nand offers it whatever beauty it has.
