176: This Morning I Said No

\nThe possibilities of saying a 'bright shining no' where previously we've been in the habit of saying 'yes'. Or a 'bright shining yes' where we've been in the habit of saying 'no'. And on the possibility of newness, creativity and discovery when we greet other people's new ways with wonder and welcome. This episode of Turning Towards Life is a conversation about letting our genuineness into the world, and doing the same for the people around us, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace.

\nThis Morning I Said No
\n

\nThis morning I said No when I meant No,\xa0\nIn honour \u2013 and because of - of all the times\xa0\nI have said Yes instead.\xa0
\n
\nDid it feel empowering?\nNo, it did not.\xa0\nIt felt frightening,\nLike risking it all.\xa0\nIt felt like finally saying the thing\nThat will make you not love me.\xa0
\n
\nAnd it felt lonely and cold\nAnd I tried to suck it back in,\nRewind the tape player,\nKill the sound of the word\nWith a knife.\xa0
\n
\nOr paint over it with pastel colours\nAnd make you a cup of tea \u2013\xa0\nDistract you from\xa0\nWhat I just showed you\nWhen no other word would come.\xa0
\n
\nBut she stayed there,\nDefiant,\nFinally freed from the\xa0\nPrison made of\xa0\nPretty, acceptable,\nPlease-love-me\nYeses.
\n
\nAnd I do not know what she will do next,\nThis bright, emboldened No.\xa0\nShe seems to like it here,\xa0\nOut in the wild.\xa0
\n
\nSo I am clearing out a room\nFull of things I thought I needed,\xa0\nSo that she can stay.\n\n
