Chapter 8: Mark makes a couple more friends, Chenoa and Jamal, encounters a lioness and discovers that he can understand what she is thinking. He talks her out of eating him, follows her home, and realizes there is much more to the school complex than he had first thought. He tells his friends about the incident and they are surprised because it is such a rare ability. Mark meets the bully team leader, Slone, and declines to join his group.

The four friends are pre-chosen, an event that baffles all of the school staff and The Council of Elders. As a result, they get assigned to their tribes, meet some upperclassmen and learn a little about the Magi sport of flags.
