For believers \n1 \nHow lonely sits the city\n that was full of people!\nHow she has become like a widow,\n who was once great among the nations!\nShe who was a princess among the provinces\n has become a slave!\n2 \nShe weeps sorely in the night,\n her tears are on her cheeks;\namong all her lovers\n she has none to comfort her.\nAll her friends have dealt treacherously with her;\n they have become her enemies.\n3 \nJudah has gone into captivity,\n under affliction and great servitude;\nshe dwells among the nations,\n she finds no rest;\nall her persecutors overtook her\n in the midst of distress.\n4 \nThe roads to Zion mourn\n because no one comes to the solemn feasts.\nAll her gates are desolate;\n her priests sigh,\nher virgins are afflicted,\n and she herself suffers bitterly.\n5 \nHer adversaries have become her masters,\n her enemies prosper;\nfor the Lord has afflicted her\n because of the multitude of her transgressions.\nHer children have gone into captivity\n before the enemy.\n6 \nFrom the daughter of Zion\n all her beauty has departed.\nHer princes have become like deer\n that find no pasture;\nthey fled without strength\n before the pursuer.\n7 \nIn the days of her affliction and misery\n Jerusalem remembers all her pleasant things\n that she had in the days of old.\nWhen her people fell into the hand of the enemy,\n there was no one to help her.\nThe adversaries saw her\n and mocked at her desolation.
