In hearings last week, Congress questioned TikTok\\u2019s C.E.O., Shou Zi Chew, about the platform\\u2019s addictive algorithm, its content, and whether it shares user data with the Chinese government. The hearings bore a resemblance to the questioning of Mark Zuckerberg over Facebook in 2018\\u2014not least because of the representatives\\u2019 incomprehension of how the technology works. This d\\xe9j\\xe0 vu raises questions: Why hasn\\u2019t anything been done to protect Americans\\u2019 data privacy? And is a ban the only way?
