Singer, Songwriter, Lyricist, Producer, CEO\u2014all these titles fall under one man\u2019s musical resume. While J. Poww is known for his success as one of the lead singers of the award-winning group U.N.V. (a/k/a Universal Nubian Voices) of Madonna\u2019s Maverick/Warner Bros. label, his musical abilities extend far beyond a voice. As the primary writer on all three albums, J. Poww wrote the group\u2019s biggest hit, \u201cSomething\u2019s Goin\u2019 On\u201d which reached #1 on the billboard charts and remained there for nine weeks.\n\n\nHowever, J. Poww wasn\u2019t always a singer. Born and raised in the Capital City of Lansing, Mich., J. Poww spent his younger years not singing but rapping. It wasn\u2019t until high school that he would truly explore his singing talents.\xa0\n\n\nSince U.N.V., J. Poww has stepped up his game in a major way. In 1996, he formed his first independent label TRE-J RECORDS made up of himself, Kenneth Crear, Johnny Yaldo and John Gillete. The label was nationally distributed by Indie Distribution. His first release was for a rap duo J & The Phatman who\u2019s first single \u201cKeep It Comin,\u201d produced by chart-topping producers Soul Shock and Karlyn, sold thirty-two thousand units.
