A New Zealand author is excited after having her book picked up for an American movie deal.
The novel Sorrow and Bliss, written by Meg Mason, has been picked up production company New Regency, which has worked on movies such as Best Picture winners 12 Years a Slave and Birdman, as well as Pretty Woman, Fight Club and Bohemian Rhapsody,
The book tells the story a woman trying to make sense of a mental illness she has lived with for decades.
Mason, who lives in Sydney, told Mike Hosking that because of the pandemic, it hasn't felt terribly real that the book and movie deal have happened as she hasn't met many people, most parts done remotely.
She says that couldn't imagine anything worse than the author being on set dictating what should be done, and that she hasn't thought about casting.
"I'm so excited by the idea that it might be a movie as you get to see what other amazing creative people will do with it."
Mason says she had been told not to expect the studio head to read the book, but the New Regency boss quoted sections to her.
"I think they just enjoyed the combination of the pathos and the humour and it's a little bit dark but it's hopeful."
