A report from Auckland Council\u2019s boarding house inspectors shows out of 44 properties suspected to be breaking the law, 40 were \u201coperating unauthorised transient\xa0accommodation\xa0or boarding\xa0houses\u201d.\xa0
Many had issues with fire safety, gang-affiliated guests and owners questioning council authority.\xa0
Professor of Construction at AUT, John Tookey, told Mike Hosking there\u2019s been a selection of 44 \u2013 most of which turned out to be crap \u2013 and that\u2019s not entirely surprising. \xa0
Tookey said \u201cIt\u2019s a tough economy to deal with \u2013 people are not necessarily prioritising upkeep.\u201d\xa0
