In today’s episode, we discuss the importance of recognizing that every mother’s approach to motherhood will be different. We talk about the importance of seeking out education on motherhood to be able to make educated choices as you are trying to meet the unique needs of your child, as well as your own needs. We suggest that experienced mothers should try to guide and mentor like-minded young mothers who have similar interests and goals instead of trying to convince other women to do what they do. We talk about how this applies to things like breastfeeding. We discuss why you should be careful with what you share, to not offend others who may be sensitive with certain topics. These topics can be breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding, home births vs. hospital births, use of pacifiers, and other parenting approaches and methods. We give the advice to only give advice when it is solicited as much as you can. We recommend that if you’re a young mother, be honest and speak out about your real questions so that you can get more direct answers. We also advise that you share what you’ve successfully tried instead of sharing only theory. We talk about how you can avoid shaming and commanding language when giving information, focusing on empowering others. We emphasize the importance of being open to different perspectives and feeling okay with adapting to suit yourself.

“We had done that video after the last home birth, and I talked about the successful home birth, and the one where I got transferred to the hospital. And we talked openly about the pros and the cons, the fears and the facts, and...when someone heard that information, they then processed, ‘Wow, I might try a home birth,’ and then they came to me with questions. So...if you can put information out there in a non-targeted way, then someone who is interested in that experience can come to you.” 17:29
